Carl Hansen & Son Factory Visit
written by Marc Spowart

In the world of interior & furniture design, few names resonate as deeply as Carl Hansen & Son. Embodying the essence of Danish craftsmanship, they have become synonymous with timeless elegance, unmatched quality, and a dedication to design that transcends generations.
As proud suppliers of Carl Hansen & Son, we were fortunate enough to visit their factory last summer, nestled in the Danish countryside. It was an opportunity to see some designs we have only ever admired from a catalogue, and also learn how some of our favourites are crafted - all the way from raw timber to the finished product.

From the moment you step into the facility, it is clear to see it is not just a manufacturing space - it’s a living workshop where tradition meets innovation. Skilled artisans alongside modern machinery in a harmonious flow of precision and passion. Each piece of furniture still has elements that are made by hand, from shaping the solid wood components, to weaving the paper cord seats — a process that can take several hours per chair.
What struck us most was the attention to detail at every step. Wood is carefully selected for its grain and quality, and each component is crafted with minimal waste. The factory is also deeply committed to sustainability, using FSC-certified materials and implementing practices that minimize their environmental footprint.
The tour concluded in a showroom that feels more like a gallery, showcasing a curated selection of pieces from Carl Hansen & Søn’s extensive collection. Seeing these works in person — knowing the care that went into each one — brings a deeper appreciation for the philosophy of Danish design: simplicity, functionality, and enduring beauty.
